In the end, Floyd Mayweather’s class and experience prevailed.
The 40-year-old outclassed Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, eventually stopping the UFC superstar in the 10th round.
It was the outcome that most people - the bookmakers included - expected. However, many boxing fans on social media were impressed by the spirit and bravery McGregor showed throughout the bout.
The Irishman, who had never been involved in a competitive boxing match before this weekend, lost the fight following referee Robert Byrd’s stoppage.
It was a stoppage which arrived too early for some people, including McGregor himself, although Mayweather delivered a flurry of punches in the tenth and appeared to be on the verge of sealing a knockout.

McGregor and Mayweather speak after fight

“[Mayweather’s] not that fast, he’s not that powerful, but boy is he composed in there,” McGregor, who landed 111 of 430 punches (26%) compared to 170 of 320 punches for his opponent (53%), was quoted as saying by theGuardian after the fight.

“Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch,” Mayweather commented. “We know in MMA, he fights for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, he started to slow down. I guaranteed to everybody that this wouldn’t go the distance.”

Regardless of the outcome, both Mayweather and McGregor stand to earn an absolute fortune from the fight.
This is reportedly the most lucrative fight in history, beating the previous record set by Mayweather’s long-awaited fight against Manny Pacquiao back in 2015.

Shortly after Mayweather’s victory, which means he bows out on 50-0, Pacquiao dropped a classy tweet, praising both fighters.
