Image
The Nigerian musician, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has condemned the deployment of soldiers to the hometown of controversial separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Charly Boy, leader of the ‘OurMumuDonDo’ movement said the federal government should be more worried about safeguarding lives and properties than destroying it. He said this in a statement signed by him, Adeyanju Deji, leader of Concerned Nigerians and Adebayo Raphael, Publicity Secretary, OurMumuDonDo Movement. The statement further explained that the people of Abia State deserved better than unnecessary disturbances in the city. “The good people of Abia State deserve better than the undue panic under which they have been placed since the invasion which has completely restricted them from going about their daily activities freely like they used to.” The movement urged the federal government to promote peace and unity instead of raising tension brewing hatred for one another in the country. “Finally

In separate statements on Friday, they called on Nigerians to eschew violence and respect the rule of law. Also, the Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to ensure that the military did not use “excessive force” in the region, saying it was already investigating allegations of human rights violation. The Nigerian Army had during the week deployed soldiers in the South-East under an operation code-named, ‘Operation Python Dance’, which seeks to curb violent crimes within the region. The soldiers, have, however, had several clashes with IPOB members, which have reportedly led to the

KILLED! Lily Donkor An 18-year-old Achimota Senior High School (SHS) student, who shot and killed his colleague, Lily Dzigbordi Asibetse Donkor, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment term by a juvenile court in Accra. The final-year student, who will be spending his jail term at the Correctional Home in Accra, was found guilty after almost a nine-month long trial. He was charged with manslaughter when he appeared before the court, presided over by Bernardine S A Senoo. The convict was said to have brought out his father’s gun from under a bed with intent to shoot into the air, but ended up killing his friend, Lily Donkor, who was also a third-year student at the same school. However, days after the verdict, some Ghanaians, including the bereaved family, appear to be concerned about the jail term slapped on the convict. Whilst some commentators believe the court did no wrong concerning the term of incarceration, others are of the view that the punishment was to

You have sinned against the constitution

Image
Fiery Lagos-based lawyer, Femi Falana, has come hard against the Nigerian Army saying the Federal Government flouted the stipulations of the constitution with the action. Falana said the security operatives carried out illegality in allegedly invading the home of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He listed seven grounds of argument to back his allegation. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) noted that the government had the responsibility to protect law and order, but added that such should not be carried out with disregard to the constitution. “No doubt, the Federal Government of Nigeria has the duty to maintain law and order in the country. But it is the duty which cannot be carried out outside the ambit of the law of the land. “Last weekend, armed troops invaded Abia state to deal with the alleged threat of Mr Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to destabilise the country. “It was reported yesterday that the

Avengers and Herdsmen Are Saints But IPOB and the Rest of Us Are Terrorists, By ‘Fisayo Soyombo

Image
How on earth can IPOB members be terrorists when notorious killers, the herdsmen, have no such designation? We are talking about a group that was named in 2015 by the Global Terrorism Index as the fourth deadliest terror group in world. Only Boko Haram, ISIS, and al-Shabab were deemed deadlier than this nomadic group of militants. These are interesting times. We’re entering an interesting, new rea of journalism in which newspaper editors will cast simple headlines but the public will nevertheless be confused. “Troops kill 14 terrorists in Plateau,” a headline could read. And readers would wonder: What kind of terrorists? Were they Biafra terrorists or Boko Haram terrorists? It could soon happen that we find our ourselves using the word ‘terrorism’ with the same ordinariness with which we do ‘armed robbery’. For this, we have ‘almighty’ President Muhammadu Buhari to thank. Buhari’s crush-or-kill disposition to agitation was what the Defence Headquarters banked on when it

“2019 Election will not hold” — Apostle Suleman

Image
Senior Pastor of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide (OFM), Apostle Johnson Suleman, has prophesied that unless Nigerians pray for the country, the 2019 election will not hold. The cleric, in a chat with journalists in his church, prophesied saying: “Tell Nigerians who wish to see democracy sustained, to pray for our leaders and work for peace; tell the leaders too to pray and be honest with the people they are serving, otherwise, elections may not hold in Nigeria in 2019. That is what God has shown me.” Apostle Suleman has been credited for many precise prophecies made in years past. The self-acclaimed ‘Oracle of God’ is the first pastor in Nigeria that prophesied in a December 2013 prophecy, the crowning of former Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi Lamido, as Emir of Kano. He equally foresaw the death of a serving cabinet member in Nigeria and asked for special prayer during a church service in January 2015. Likewise, during his ministry’s ‘Fire and

Deployment Of Soldiers To Nnamdi Kanu’s House Illegal – Falana

Image
Femi Falana, SAN Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) has described as illegal, the deployment of soldiers in the family house of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in Umuahia, Abia State. Falana, in a statement on Wednesday, said as there was no legal basis for the involvement of soldiers in the place, President Muhammadu Buhari should direct the armed troops “to withdraw and return to their barracks forthwith.” He said the Commissioner of Police in Abia State should be allowed to take over Kanu’s case in line with the provisions of the Constitution and the Police Act. Tracing the involvement of the military’s involvement in civil issues since successive military regimes in the country, Falana said, “regrettably, no conscious efforts have been made by the civilian government to demilitarise the country since power was transferred from former military dictators to the civilian wing of the political class in May 1999.” He added, “Hence, armed soldi

Tensions Rise As Russia Attacks Trump Over Threat To 'Totally Destroy' North Korea, Defends Iran's Nuclear Deal

Image
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia is “extremely concerned” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments questioning the Iran nuclear deal and suspects that Washington itself may have violated a landmark arms control treaty, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. Lavrov’s comments, made to Russian reporters at the United Nations in New York and published by his ministry on Wednesday, illustrate how deeply Moscow and Washington are at odds over an array of issues and suggest any attempts to improve already battered relations face an uphill struggle. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said Iran’s 2015 pact with six world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for loosening economic sanctions was “an embarrassment to the United States”. Washington could not abide by an agreement “if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program,” Trump said. Lavrov, whose country is a signatory to the deal, said Russia strongly disagreed with that stan

"Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make counte
